Communication Guidance for Great Lakes Gelatin Customer Service
We have received some calls about the Zika virus recently. Since our product does come from South America our customers have been asking questions.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has a webpage that explains the methods of transmission. There are no indications that Zika virus can be transmitted through food sources including gelatin or collagen hydrolysate. The methods of transmission are:
Through mosquito bites
Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (A. aegypti and A. albopictus). These are the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses.
From mother to child
Through sexual contact
Through blood transfusion
Our product is pure protein that is obtained from processing the hides of cattle. The processing is designed to remove impurities and multiple filtrations are performed during the purification process. The pH during processing is at a level that would act as a disinfectant to viruses. (note: The base is neutralized and any salts are removed before drying.)
Points to consider:
There have been no reported cases of Zika virus that have come from any food including gelatin or collagen hydrolysate.
All batches undergo microbiological analysis before it is approved.
It is an interesting fact that insects in general are not attracted to collagen protein.
All of our products are processed in facilities that adhere to GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) standards.
