A Dietitian’s Personal Experience with Collagen

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annually sponsors the Food and Nutrition Convention and Exhibition (FNCE) conference.  FNCE is the largest nutrition related conference, more than 10,000 registered dietitians, nutrition science researchers, policy makers and health care providers and industry leaders attend this conference.  What an experience.  The energy that fills the halls is remarkable.  The exhibition hall is filled with so many different companies showcasing new and old products that pertain to dietitians and health professionals.  Attending lectures at FNCE is a great avenue for dietitians and health professionals to get the most up to date nutritional information from the experts.

Great Lakes Gelatin Company attends this conference annually and has a booth at the exhibit hall.  Great Lakes Gelatin is there to help educate health care providers on the amazing benefits that collagen can provide as well as to answer any questions. 

I am a registered and licensed dietitian consulting for Great Lakes Gelatin company.  When I was first introduced to Great Lakes Gelatin Company’s Collagen Hydrolysate a little over 2 years ago, I did some research on the health benefits of collagen supplementation and there was not a lot of research completed at the time.  As a dietitian, when reviewing a nutritional supplement or product, I look for scientific evidence to back up that product.  Even though I was not able to find a lot of current research on collagen, I decided to try the product based on what the CEO of the company told me, and I was rather impressed by the results.

Based off of my personal experience supplementing with collagen, I found the product to be solid. Many of the claims that I read about it were in fact true. I was interested in taking it because I had some knee pain from overcompensating due to a tight hip joint.  I was told that I would notice results after about 4 weeks of taking it daily.  In approximately 2 weeks of starting the product, I did notice the pain subsiding.  I must say that the pain still comes around, but not as often as it once did.   Amino acids help to maintain connective tissue, they help to support proper functioning of joints and amino acids are a component of cartilage and connective tissue.  Therefore, when supplementing with collagen you are basically providing your body with the building blocks to protect your joints.


The other health benefit I have personally experienced is with muscle recovery after a workout.  Before working out, I drink Great Lakes Gelatin Company’s Collagen Endurance Plus (CEP) which gives me a boost during my exercise while also helping with muscle recovery.  I am not nearly as sore after my workouts as I normally would be, because of the collagen.  Many of the amino acids that make up collagen aid in muscle and tissue repair, help to maintain strong and elastic muscles as well as increasing endurance. 

Supplementing with collagen also has improved my sleep.  I am not one to have a problem falling asleep, my issue is staying asleep.  When I wake up in the middle of the night for whatever reason, I have a very difficult time falling back to sleep.  Collagen helps me to stay asleep longer, have a more restful sleep and it helps me to fall back to sleep easier.  For the most part when I am woken up in the middle of the night, I can generally fall back to sleep easier.  The amino acid glycine in collagen may help to improve the quality of sleep.


Not only has collagen helped me with joint pain, muscle recovery and sleeping; I also noticed a change in my mood – I have fewer highs and lows – I generally feel more even keeled.  My hair grows quickly, my skin is soft with very few wrinkles, and my nails grow much quicker and break less often.   

I believe so much in this product that I have encouraged my friends and family to give it a try.  One of my colleagues is a marathon runner and I encouraged her to try the CEP and now she takes it during her training and during the marathons she participates in.  Another friend of mine was looking for help with hair and nail growth, and she started taking it with positive results. 

Although there is not a lot of scientific evidence on the health benefits of collagen yet, more and more research is being done and the industry is definitely growing.  I can’t deny the positive experience I have had with taking this supplement.   If you are hesitant to try it for whatever reason, rest assured it is a clean product and it is purely amino acids, and the results may surprise you.
