Collagen Use in Hot Liquids - Yeah or Nay?

Does warming a collagen supplement or taking it in a hot beverage cause it to be ineffective?

The short answer is NO.  Keep reading if you are curious to know why.

Collagen Hydrolysate is a form of collagen protein that has been reduced in size to about a 50 amino acid chain.  Gelatin is the same protein, but the protein chain is longer with over 1,000 amino acids in the chain.  The collagen raw material is many times that size such that if you tried to eat the collagen raw material it cannot be significantly digested.  That is why it is necessary to bring the molecular weight of collagen to a level that allows for easy digestion.

Collagen hydrolysate is the same protein as bone broth which was a staple food until modern times.  Your great grandmother may have boiled bones for most of a day to make the bone broth.  It is the heating of the collagen in the bones that causes the protein to form smaller and smaller chains to the point that it becomes water soluble in the broth.  The boiling for 20 hours does not destroy the protein, it makes it digestible.

If you consider frying an egg, the egg white is clear before being heated.  As it is heated the clear protein turns white as it is denatured and changes its structure.  As long as you don’t burn the egg, it still has the nutrition intact.  You would have to heat it to the point that it smokes and turns black before the nutritional benefit is lost.

When you put the collagen hydrolysate in your coffee the nutrition is still intact.  After you drink the coffee the stomach acid and enzymes break down the protein chain even further to fragments of primarily 2-3 peptides.  At this point the amino acids can pass through the intestinal lining to the bloodstream so that it can be used where needed. 

Your body is constantly breaking down worn out collagen and rebuilding it with new collagen.  When your body is building up the fresh collagen it looks for the amino acid building blocks to use in the effort.  With a plentiful supply of collagen peptides, the new structures are strong and durable.  If the supply of building blocks is deficient the body does the best it can, but the new collagen is imperfect and weak.  As we get older our bodies naturally lose the ability to make the collagen amino acids efficiently and this shows up as wrinkles in the skin and brittleness in the bones. 

While the nutrients in green vegetables, fruits, and citrus are important to healthy living, our focus is on collagen support.  Vitamin C is very important to collagen formation and most people get enough of this in a typical diet.   Vegetables and fruits do not contain enough of the right kind of amino acids to meaningfully improve the bodies collagen structures as we get older.
